The History of Potato Chips

Legend has it that the potato chip was born out of a tiff between a little-known cook and one of the wealthiest people in American history.   The incident was alleged to have taken place  on August 24, 1853.  George Crum, who was  half African and half native American, was working as a cook at a resort in  Saratoga Springs, New York at the time. During his shift, a disgruntled customer kept sending back an order of french fries, complaining that they were too thick. Frustrated, Crum prepared a new batch using potatoes that were sliced paper thin and fried to a crisp. Surprisingly, the customer, who happened to be railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt,  loved it. However, that version of events was contradicted by his sister Kate Speck  Wicks. In fact, no official accounts ever proved that Crum claimed to have invented the potato chip. But in Wicks obituary, it was stated flatly that she first invented and fried the famous Saratoga Chips, also known as potato chips.  Besides that, the first popular reference to potato chips can be found in the novel A Tale Of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens. In it, he refers to them as â€Å"husky chips of potatoes.† In any case, potato chips did not gain widespread popularity until the 1920s. Around that time,  an  entrepreneur from California named  Laura Scudder  began selling chips in wax paper bags that were sealed with a warm iron in order to  reduce crumbling while keeping the chips fresh and crisp. Over time, the innovative packaging method allowed for the first time the mass production and distribution of potato chips, which began in 1926.  Today, chips are packaged in plastic bags and pumped with nitrogen gas to extend the products shelf life. The process also helps prevent the chips from getting crushed. During the 1920s, an American businessman from North Carolina named  Herman Lay began selling  potato chips out of the trunk of his car to grocers across the south. By 1938, Lay was so successful that his  Lays brand chips went into mass production and eventually became the  first successfully marketed national brand. Among the companys biggest contributions is the introduction of a crinkle-cut Ruffled chips product that tended to be  sturdier and thus less prone to breakage.   It wasnt until the 1950s though that stores started carrying potato chips in various flavors.  This was all thanks to Joe Spud Murphy, the owner of an Irish chip company named Tayto.  He developed a technology that allowed seasoning to be added during the cooking process. The first seasoned potato chip products came in two flavors:  Cheese Onion and Salt Vinegar. Pretty soon, several companies would express interest in securing the rights to Taytos technique.  Ã‚   In 1963, Lay’s Potato Chips left a memorable mark on the countrys cultural consciousness  when the company hired advertising company Young Rubicam to come up with the popular trademark slogan  Betcha can’t eat just one.†Ã‚  Soon sales went international with a marketing campaign that featured celebrity  actor Bert Lahr in a series of commercials in which he played various historical figures such as George Washington, Ceasar, and Christopher Columbus.

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles free essay sample

Unsatisfied with an already mythic stance in music, the Beatles sought to create an album that became unabashedly, unashamedly, musical. Seeking more sophisticated artistic ground, the Beatles banished all preconceived boundaries for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band; they would bring an album-oriented format into focus, while flirting with many unique studio-based arrangements that pervade amongst modern musicians today. Whether it tethers to the carnival romp of â€Å"Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite,† or the vaudevillian trot of â€Å"When I’m Sixty Four,† this becomes an all-out embrace of music’s many niches. â€Å"With a Little Help from My Friends† becomes a pleasantly rollicking pop song as soaring harmonies fade into the background; Ringo sings the lead vocals, a rarity in the Beatles discography. Even as the psychedelic smog of â€Å"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds† enters the mix, it feels welcome; the invaluable facet o f this album lies in its ability to effectively create radical musical transitions, just as the loud, ringing guitars of â€Å"Getting Better† delightfully descend into the sweeping harpsichord of â€Å"Fixing a Hole†. We will write a custom essay sample on Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Serving to end the album and serving as a testament to the cooperation of McCartney and Lennon, â€Å"A Day in the Life† displays their talents. It’s epic in its design, regal in its stance, stratospheric in its height, and satisfying in its resolution. It all represents a band striding forward, in sound and in scope. After several decades, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band remains as one of the most musically significant albums of the Beatles catalog. Naturally, the impact of the album makes sense. Bands could venture into new territory without fear, without guidelines to follow. The album’s innovations became employed in modern music; the album’s impact still lingers in modern music. Despite this sentiment, the sonic kaleidoscope of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band remains distinctive in music, and that quality alone aids the legacy of this ever-transcendent album.

The Curry brothers know their field is one of the best. They have really good intentions to make the team and the playground grow together, but they are a little bit under confidence. Even they have talk about it, and they agreed not to under or low they price, Ted, Bill and their partner knows Barbara is the best and maybe the only option they have to have a really good deal. So this make them feel insecure about having mistakes that make Barbara walk away. Barbara en the other hand is overconfidence. She knows she could do better in the Curry field but won’t pay more than what she is paying now. She does not want to look for opportunities, and that makes she a difficult negotiation partner. Veterans Burial Locations Available Online

Veterans Burial Locations Available Online More than three million records showing where veterans have been buried in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national cemeteries are available online. The innovation will make it easy for anyone with Internet access to search for the gravesite locations of deceased family members and friends. Veterans Burial Locations The VAs  nationwide grave locator contains more than three million records of veterans and dependents buried in the VA’s 120 cemeteries since the Civil War. It also has records of some burials in state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery from 1999 to the present. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi stated in a VA press release: This advance in service culminates years of effort by VA’s national cemetery staffs to put old paper records into this database. Making burial locations more accessible may bring more visitors to the honored resting places that we consider national shrines and historical treasures. The records date to the establishment of the first national cemeteries during the Civil War. The Web site will be updated nightly with information on burials the previous day. The site displays the same information that visitors to national cemeteries find on kiosks or in written ledgers to locate gravesites: name, dates of birth and death, period of military service, branch of service and rank if known, the cemetery’s location and phone number, plus the grave’s precise location in the cemetery. The home page, Burial and Memorial Benefits, allows the reader to select the Nationwide Gravesite Locator to begin a search. State cemetery burial records are from those cemeteries that use VA’s database to order government headstones and markers for veterans’ graves. Since 1999, Arlington National Cemetery, operated by the Department of Army, has used that database. The information in the database comes from records of interment, which before 1994 were paper records, kept at each cemetery. VA’s interment records contain more information than what is shown on the Internet and cemetery kiosks. Some information, such as identification of the next of kin, will not be shown to the public for privacy reasons. Immediate family members with a government-issued identification card may request to see the full record of a burial when they visit a national cemetery.

A Brief History of the African Nation of Tunisia

A Brief History of the African Nation of Tunisia Modern Tunisians are the descendants of indigenous Berbers and of people from numerous civilizations that have invaded, migrated to, and been assimilated into the population over the millennia. Recorded history in Tunisia begins with the arrival of Phoenicians, who founded Carthage and other North African settlements in the 8th century B.C. Carthage became a major sea power, clashing with Rome for control of the Mediterranean until it was defeated and captured by the Romans in 146 B.C. Muslim Conquest The Romans ruled and settled in North Africa until the 5th century, when the Roman Empire fell and Tunisia was invaded by European tribes, including the Vandals. The Muslim conquest in the 7th century transformed Tunisia and the make-up of its population, with subsequent waves of migration from around the Arab and Ottoman world, including significant numbers of Spanish Muslims and Jews at the end of the 15th century. From Arab Center to French Protectorate Tunisia became a center of Arab culture and learning and was assimilated into the Turkish Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. It was a French protectorate from 1881 until independence in 1956, and retains close political, economic, and cultural ties with France. Independence for Tunisia Tunisias independence from France in 1956 ended the protectorate established in 1881. President Habib Ali Bourguiba, who had been the leader of the independence movement, declared Tunisia a republic in 1957, ending the nominal rule of the Ottoman Beys. In June 1959, Tunisia adopted a constitution modeled on the French system, which established the basic outline of the highly centralized presidential system that continues today. The military was given a defined defensive role, which excluded participation in politics. A Strong and Healthy Beginning Starting from independence, President Bourguiba placed strong emphasis on economic and social development, especially education, the status of women, and the creation of jobs, policies that continued under Zine El Abidine Ben Alis administration. The result was strong social progress – high literacy and school attendance rates, low population growth rates, and relatively low poverty rates – and generally steady economic growth. These pragmatic policies have contributed to social and political stability. Bourguiba,  President for Life Progress toward full democracy has been slow. Over the years, President Bourguiba stood unopposed for re-election several times and was named President for Life in 1974 by a constitutional amendment. At the time of independence, the Neo-Destourian Party (later the Parti Socialiste Destourien, PSD or Socialist Destourian Party)- enjoying broad support because of its role at the forefront of the independence movement- became the sole legal party. Opposition parties were banned until 1981. Democratic change Under Ben Ali When President Ben Ali came to power in 1987, he promised greater democratic openness and respect for human rights, signing a national pact with opposition parties. He oversaw constitutional and legal changes, including abolishing the concept of President for life, the establishment of presidential term limits, and provision for greater opposition party participation in political life. But the ruling party renamed the Rassemblement Constitutionel Dà ©mocratique (RCD or Democratic Constitutional Rally), dominated the political scene due to its historic popularity and the advantage it enjoyed as the ruling party. Survival of a Strong Political Party Ben Ali ran for re-election unopposed in 1989 and 1994. In the multiparty era, he won 99.44% of the vote in 1999 and 94.49% of the vote in 2004. In both elections he faced weak opponents. The RCD won all seats in the Chamber of Deputies in 1989, and won all of the directly elected seats in the 1994, 1999, and 2004 elections. However, constitutional amendments provided for the distribution of additional seats to the opposition parties by 1999 and 2004. Effectively Becoming President for Life A May 2002 referendum approved constitutional changes proposed by Ben Ali that allowed him to run for a fourth term in 2004 (and a fifth, his final, because of age, in 2009), and provided judicial immunity during and after his presidency. The referendum also created a second parliamentary chamber, and provided for other changes. SourcePublic Domain material, US Department of State  Background Notes.
